Children from across Hudson County -- and beyond -- are flocking to the Jersey City Theatre Center for a new art class. The program runs from July to October and is taught by Jersey City-based artist Gabriel Pacheco, who told The Jersey Journal it used to be held at the Distillery Gallery, but had to move to Merseles Studio because of construction. "It's the same class. It's great because the consistency wasn't broken and we gained a few new students," Pacheco said. "People from Hoboken, Downtown Jersey City, even Manhattan have come to the class because they've heard how successful it is," he added. Pacheco says it's great to work in a gallery because he can use it as a teaching tool. Each week the kids practice on a different medium including acrylics, sketch, pastels, water-colors, mixed-medium and found art. At its peak, the class, which is for kids ages 6 to 12, had 27 students. While some projects take one class, others, like the mosaic project the students are currently working on, take a bit longer to complete. The children's work will be displayed at an exhibit in September to mark the end of one "art" year and the beginning of the next.
