Know Your Rights Under New Jersey’s Anti-Bullying Law
An Interactive Workshop for Parents of School-age Children
October 5, 2015 7-9pm

Indiegrove, 121 Newark Ave. 5th Fl., Jersey City, NJ

"Harassment, intimidation or bullying" means any gesture, any written, verbal or physical act, or any electronic communication, whether it be a single incident or a series of incidents, that is reasonably perceived as being motivated either by any actual or perceived characteristic, such as race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or a mental, physical or sensory disability, or by any other distinguishing characteristic, that takes place on school property, at any school-sponsored function, on a school bus, or off school grounds..  --New Jersey Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights.

New Jersey has one of the strongest anti-bullying laws in the country, but to benefit from its provisions and ensure that schools are fulfilling their obligations under the law, parents need to know how it defines bullying, how to report suspected bullying, and what to expect from the school and district once you’ve made a report.  Lycette Nelson, Esq., of the Law Office of Lycette Nelson will lead this interactive workshop to assist parents to identify what constitutes bullying, how to report it, and what to do if you think the school has failed to take appropriate action in response to bullying.

It will also cover particular characteristics that make children more susceptible to bullying, such as disability, sexual orientation, and gender non-conformity; cyberbullying and other forms of intimidation and harassment that may occur off school grounds; and resources available for children and parents. The information is primarily aimed at parents of children in public and charter schools, since the law imposes specific duties on these schools, but parents of children in private schools can gain valuable information from it as well.

Seating is limited so please RSVP to lnelson@lycettenelsonlaw.com by 9/28/15; additional workshops will be scheduled if interest exceeds capacity.
